Yesterday afternoon, Bruce Ryan and I headed over to Inspace to participate in the latest Creative Informatics showcase event organised by Vikki Jones and Caitlin McDonald. Members of eight project teams gave short presentations on their research, most of which have been funded in the last couple of years through small research grants.
We were the first to speak with a summary of the findings from the empirical work from Platform to Platform: an investigation into audience engagement with digitised archives and their transformative impact across different online formats. (The Creative Informatics blog post about the project gives details of the practical work that prefaced the empirical study.)
We enjoyed listening to the presentations that followed ours. Amongst the other work funded in 2021, three team members contributed on two projects:
- James Mavor on Dynamic range: immersive screenwriting for sound
- Arabella Sinclair and Christopher Lucas on Collaborative storytelling with an AI author
Three 2022 projects were introduced by:
- Martin Disley on Investigative computing: an aesthetic approach
- Tod Van Gunten on Music streaming as global cultural diffusion
- Ethan Robson on SOVRA: Subjective orientation in VR audio
In addition, Victoria Evans presented on Oceanic heterotopias (funded in 2020), and Glaire Anderson and Deniz Vural spoke about Digital Munya (also outlined in a Creative Informatics blog post).

The highlights of the afternoon for me were learning about forensic architecture from Martin Disley, witnessing the way in which textual information from a book can be transformed into an immersive digital experience from Glaire Anderson, and seeing examples of AI-assisted creative writing in the work presented by Arabella Sinclair and Christopher Lucas.
