Newly published: ‘Digital youth work: the youth worker’s balancing act between digital innovation and digital literacy insecurities’

Information Research logoAmongst the papers from Information Seeking in Context (ISIC) 2018 published in the latest issue of Information Research is an article that I co-authored with my Centre for Social Informatics colleagues Alicja Pawluczuk, Dr Gemma Webster, and Dr Colin Smith.

In the paper we discuss the ways in which UK youth workers perceive their work in the context of digital literacy project facilitation. The findings, which derive from the analysis of data from interviews conducted with twenty digital youth workers, reveal (a) that youth workers are both excited and sceptical about the digital developments in the field, and (b) an anxiety associated with the lack of digital literacy skills in the youth work sector.

Social media by proxy: study participants sought

My Centre for Social Informatics colleagues Dr Gemma Webster and Frances Ryan are currently recruiting participants for their Carnegie-funded research project that investigates the ways in which carers manage, or help to manage, the social media accounts for people with dementia. The type of participant that they seek are those who play such a role for a cared-for person. The participants do not, however, need to be primary carers of people with dementia. Continue reading

Social media by proxy: a Carnegie Research Incentive Grant for Dr Gemma Webster

Congratulations to my Centre for Social Informatics colleague Dr Gemma Webster, who has recently been awarded a Carnegie Research Incentive Grant (RIG). Such grants are offered to make it possible for Early Career Researchers like Gemma to undertake a short project as a Principal Investigator.

Gemma‘s application for funding is one of 59 that were successful from a total of 131 submissions in the last RIG application round (as noted in the Carnegie Trust’s analysis of RIG outcomes for the March 2018 deadline).

Gemma‘s project is entitled ‘Social media by proxy: strategies for managing the online profiles of adults with dementia’. Continue reading

Measuring the social impact of digital youth participation: new paper available on OnlineFirst

The seventh (and final) article that I recently co-authored for publication in the Journal of Librarianship and Information Science (JoLIS) has now been published as an OnlineFirst paper. Entitled ‘Youth digital participation: measuring social impact‘, the content of the article concerns scholarly debate around digital participatory youth projects, and approaches to their evaluation. My co-authors Alicja Pawluczuk, Colin F Smith, Gemma Webster and I reveal (1) an over-reliance on traditional evaluation techniques for such initiatives, and (2) a scarcity of models for the assessment of the social impact of digital participatory youth projects. Transmedia Literacy International 2018 is currently taking place in Barcelona, Spain. This afternoon at the conference, Centre for Social Informatics PhD student Alicja Pawluczuk presented a paper (co-authored with her supervisors Dr Colin Smith, Dr Gemma Webster and Professor Hazel Hall) on perceptions of social impact held by youth workers, and processes for the evaluation of digital youth projects. Seven JoLIS paper acceptances for CSI #i3rgu

File:Journal of Librarianship and Information Science.jpgLast summer members of the Centre for Social Informatics delivered nine papers at Information: interactions and impact (i3) 2017. Following the conference, we were given the opportunity to develop this work into submissions for the Journal of Librarianship and Information Science (JoLIS). We took up this offer by working seven of the nine conference papers up to full journal article manuscripts. These were all submitted by the deadline of September 30th 2017. Following peer review and revisions all seven were accepted, and they will be published in JoLIS in due course. The manuscripts for all accepted articles have now been added to the Edinburgh Napier repository, and can be downloaded by clicking the article titles below. Continue reading
