This time last year on 18th December 2019, following our usual tradition, the Centre for Social Informatics staff and students marked the end of the year with an ‘All centre’ celebration of their achievements of the previous six months. This kind of get-together is completely impossible under the current pandemic restrictions. So, instead of the usual hilarity in room C34a of Napier’s Merchiston campus, during which I use my enormous egg timer to time five minute updates from everyone around the table over the course of two hours (glass of wine in hand), yesterday afternoon we gathered online for just 30 minutes of social fun. Every six months the staff and research students from the Social Informatics group at Edinburgh Napier University gather for an ‘All centre’ celebration of their recent achievements. The December 2019 gathering took place on Wednesday 18th December, with 19 participants. The format of the meeting allowed for a maximum 5 minute update from each person. Continue reading
Centre for Social Informatics at #ASIST2016, Copenhagen
Next week I will be attending the 2016 Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIST) Annual meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark. On the evening of Tuesday 18th October there will be a University reception at the conference. I have created a flyer to distribute at this event with Frances Ryan (one of my PhD students, whose participation at the conference is supported by the John Campbell Trust). Jason Farradane Award 2016: Hazel Hall
Last week UKeIG announced that I am the winner of the 2016 Jason Farradane Award. For me it is a huge honour even to have been nominated for this prize. The news that I am the actual recipient caught me somewhat off-guard last Wednesday – on a day disrupted by a fire at work that resulted in the closure of campus at 2pm. I have since been overwhelmed with congratulatory messages by email, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and in person from friends, family, and colleagues. Thank you all! Continue reading
Congratulations Dr Ella Taylor-Smith
Many congratulations to Dr Ella Taylor-Smith of the Centre for Social Informatics. Ella will graduate with a PhD from Edinburgh Napier University at the Usher Hall this morning.
Ella has been awarded a PhD for her thesis entitled Participation Space Studies: a socio-technical exploration of activist and community groups’ use of online and offline spaces to support their work. Her doctoral work was supervised by Professor Elisabeth Davenport, Dr Colin Smith, and Dr Michael Smyth.
Next week Ella will be sharing some of her PhD findings in a paper entitled ‘Non public eparticipation in social media spaces’ at Social Media and Society 2016. This major international conference takes place between 11th and 13th July in London. Continue reading
