Diary entry/to do list, 11th December 1989: SuperCalc anyone?
Thanks to a minor staffing difficulty at a small Edinburgh HE college, exactly 30 years ago today, on 11th December 1989, I started my career as an academic.
One month earlier, on 9th November (the day that the Berlin Wall came down) I was interviewed for, and then offered, a temporary Lecturer post in the Department of Communication and Information Studies (CIS) at Queen Margaret College (now Queen Margaret University). The main purpose of this role was to undertake the teaching duties of Senior Lecturer Jim Herring (James E Herring) for two academic terms. Jim no longer had the capacity to teach ‘his’ classes because he had recently stepped up as Acting Head of Department of CIS while Head of Department Scott Allan was covering a vacant College Vice Principal post. Last week many members of the worldwide Information Science community gathered in Melbourne, Australia for the 82nd Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIST). I was sorry not to be there myself. This was due to my teaching commitments this semester, in particular my final year undergraduate Knowledge Management module.

Despite my lack of physical presence at the conference, I kept an eye on the hash-tagged tweets from the event (#asist2019; #asist19). I was particularly interested in the Twitter stream around breakfast time (in the UK) on Tuesday 22nd October when the delegates in Melbourne were sitting down for the conference dinner and awards ceremony. This was because Visiting Professor to the Centre for Social Informatics Dr Brian Detlor had kindly agreed to step up to the stage to accept the 2019 Clarivate Analytics Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award on my behalf.
The award was presented by Abebe Rorissa of the University of Albany – thank you! I should also thank Rebekah (Becky) Willson of McGill University for taking photographs during the presentation. Continue reading

Colin Smith
Congratulations to Dr Colin F Smith on his recent promotion to the post of Associate Professor at Edinburgh Napier University.
Colin is a member of the Centre for Social Informatics. His research interests include the role of the Internet for political parties in contemporary democratic practices, digital delivery platforms for public services, and the use of new technology by parliamentarians.
Colin also supervises the doctoral work of three of the PhD students in our group: Najla Almari on interactive education for female students in Saudi Arabi; Iris Buunk on tacit knowledge sharing supported by online social platforms; and Alicija Pawluczuk on the social impact of digital youth projects.
Each year the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science (SGSSS), of which Edinburgh Napier University is part, offers a number of 3-month full-time internships for PhD students. These provide opportunities for second and third year PhD students to develop a range of transferable skills, enhance their employability, and gain experience of working within a public sector organisation in a short (funded) break from their PhD studies. On Friday 23rd March the UK higher education funding bodies announced the appointment of members to the panels for the first stage of the REF 2021 exercise. The panel members were selected from over 4,000 nominations submitted last year by subject associations and other organisations with an interest in research. The panels comprise leading researchers, and individuals with expertise in the wider use and benefits of research.
