Last week the Association for Information Science and Technology announced that I have won the 2019 Clarivate Analytics Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award. This award recognises and honours sustained and unique contributions to teaching information science (including the use of innovative and imaginative teaching materials and methods), research and professional association activities related to teaching excellence, and the impact of teaching on students, colleagues and institutions. It also acknowledges prior awards for teaching. Continue reading

Update post-conference: Four of the CSI students won awards at the conference. Frances Ryan won first prize for the best third year full presentation. John Mowbray won second prize for his second year 20×20 presentation and Iris Buunk third prize for hers. Lyndsey Jenkins won second prize in the first year poster competition.

Today the research students in the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University are hosting their annual conference (hashtag #socphdconf). The event has been organised by a committee of six students, three of whom are from the Centre for Social Informatics: Frances Ryan, Iris Buunk and Lyndsey Jenkins. The other student organisers are Baraq Ghaleb, John McGowan and Andreas Steyven. My colleague Dr Kevin Chalmers, who was previously involved in this series of conferences when a research student in the School himself, has also been helping out with the preparations for the event. On 12th and 13th April we hosted an ESRC-funded training event for doctoral students in Information Science at Edinburgh Napier’s Sighthill campus. There were 23 participants in total, representing the four partner institutions of the Information Science Pathway of the Doctoral Training Centre of the Scottish Graduate School of Science. In addition, we welcomed two visiting Greek academics to the gathering: Dr Petros Kostagiolas and Dr Christina Banou, both from the Ionian University of Corfu. Delivered over two days, the training comprised a mix of lectures and exercises with plenty of time for the students to renew friendships and make new connections, including a small drinks reception on the first evening. Flying from Toronto to St Louis
After a busy few days in Ontario, Canada – during which I contributed to a research symposium at McMaster University on UK efforts to build a UK-wide network of library and information science researchers, ran a workshop on promoting research using social media for McMaster PhD students, and delivered a colloquium paper on the work of the UK Library and Information Science Research Coalition and its lasting impact at the University of Toronto – I am now in St Louis, Missouri in the US for ASIST 2015. The conference proper started on Sunday afternoon (following two days of pre-conference seminars and workshops), and runs until Tuesday evening. Continue reading
