Information Literacy for Democratic Engagement: project update #IL-DEM
The Centre for Social Informatics is currently undertaking a project entitled Information Literacy for Democratic Engagement (IL-DEM). Supported by a grant from the CILIP Information Literacy Group, our work investigates levels of digital and information literacy within Scotland’s Community Council system.
Specifically Peter Cruickshank, Dr Bruce Ryan and I are exploring how community councillors develop the skills required to inform and engage with the citizens that they represent, and how libraries support this work. In doing so we’re extending two established research streams within the Centre for Social Informatics: Cruickshank and Ryan’s work on digital engagement in local democracy (such as our DigiCC workshops), and mine with Christine Irving on information literacy and life-long learning. This work also builds upon our group’s track record in library and information science research. Continue reading
Edinburgh Napier University launches its LGBT+ network
Last Tuesday evening I was pleased to attend the launch event of new employee network at Edinburgh Napier University for LGBT+ colleagues and their supporters. The establishment of the network results from the University’s collaboration with Stonewall, the LGBT charity. Research conducted by Stonewall has demonstrated that such networks can play a vital role in supporting LGBT+ colleagues (whether or not that are out at work), and can help drive positive change in the workplace. Poster presentation in Copenhagen: Mapping the UK Information Workforce at #asist2016

I’ve been in Copenhagen since the end of last week, participating at the 79th Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology. I’ve been enjoying the presentations – from Greg Welch‘s keynote on telepresence to Debbie Rabina‘s account of research of prisoners’ information needs examined through discourse analysis – and catching up with colleagues from around the world.
There’s some really interesting work being conducted in Information Science across the globe, and I’ve learnt about some tempting job opportunities too. For example, if you’re functionally bilingual in English and French, and looking for a tenure-track position in North America, the University of Ottawa’s School of Information Studies – l’École des sciences de l’information (ÉSIS) – is hoping to recruit an Associate Professor who can make contributions to teaching and research in library and information management. Ada Lovelace Day 2016 in Edinburgh #ALD16
Today is Ada Lovelace Day, a worldwide celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and maths. Across Edinburgh there are a number of events to mark the day.
Edinburgh Napier University is hosting a public lecture this evening at its Craiglockhart Campus. The speaker is Professor Caroline Wilkinson, Director of the Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University. Caroline will discuss her varied career and how it has combined science with a number of disciplines including art, forensics, computing and anatomy. She will also make the case for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM). This event is chaired by Dr Sandra Cairncross, Assistant Principal at Edinburgh Napier University and Chair of Equate Scotland. I will be giving the vote of thanks and chairing the Q&A session following Caroline’s talk. Continue reading

This year’s ASIST Annual Lecture takes place on Wednesday 30th November 2016 at Edinburgh Napier University. This is the first time that any lecture in this series has been presented in the UK.
The speaker at this event is Professor Steve Fuller, Auguste Comte Chair in Social Epistemology at the University of Warwick. In a presentation entitled What, if anything, makes knowledge an improvement over information? Steve will discuss the tension between our thirst for easy access to vast quantities of information and our fears of information overload, and he will explore how concepts of information vary across contexts. Calling girls in S1-S3: free workshops on forensics and physical computing, Edinburgh 11 October 2016 #ALD16
As part of the celebrations of Ada Lovelace Day on Tuesday 11th October 2016 the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University is offering the opportunity for school girls in S1-S3 to come to the Craiglockhart campus after school to take part in computing workshops.
