Each year on the second Tuesday of October we mark Ada Lovelace Day at Edinburgh Napier University as part of the worldwide celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and maths. The purpose of this activity is to showcase role models who will encourage more girls into careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), and to support women who are already working in STEM. Today is Ada Lovelace Day, a worldwide celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and maths. Across Edinburgh there are a number of events to mark the day.
Edinburgh Napier University is hosting a public lecture this evening at its Craiglockhart Campus. The speaker is Professor Caroline Wilkinson, Director of the Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University. Caroline will discuss her varied career and how it has combined science with a number of disciplines including art, forensics, computing and anatomy. She will also make the case for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM). This event is chaired by Dr Sandra Cairncross, Assistant Principal at Edinburgh Napier University and Chair of Equate Scotland. As was the case in many UK universities, last Tuesday 8th March – International Women’s Day – was a busy day for Edinburgh Napier University’s Athena SWAN teams. The coordinators of our gender equality network (GEN) – Dr Clare Taylor (Senior Lecturer in the School of Life, Sport and Social Sciences) and Frances Ryan (PhD student, School of Computing) – organised ‘equality breakfasts’ on each of the three main University campuses. These were co-hosted by the Athena SWAN leads for our six schools and Equate Scotland, the Edinburgh Napier based organisation that supports the recruitment, retention, development, and progression of women in science, engineering, technology and the built environment in Scotland. - What are the wider impacts of gender stereotyping on society at large?
- Which approaches work best in achieving sustained change with respect to gender imbalance in educational settings and the workplace?
These questions will be addressed at a half-day workshop on tackling gender inequality, hosted by the Employment Research Institute (ERI) at Edinburgh Napier University from 10:00-13:00 on Tuesday 10th May 2016. The discussions will take into account recent research on gender imbalances in education and key sectors of the economy undertaken at the ERI. Continue reading
