The Annual Meeting of the Association for Information Science and Technology 2018 (ASIST 2018) takes place this week in Vancouver, Canada. Representing the Centre for Social Informatics at the conference is PhD student Lyndsey Middleton. Lyndsey took part in the conference doctoral colloquium on Sunday, and tomorrow (Tuesday) at 10:30 Vancouver time (18:30 in the UK) she will be presenting a full paper as a contribution to the main conference programme. Congratulations Dr John Mowbray!

Congratulations to Dr John Mowbray, who was awarded his PhD at the Edinburgh Napier University graduation ceremony at the Usher Hall in Edinburgh yesterday. I was John’s Director of Studies, his second supervisor was Professor Robert Raeside, and third supervisor Pete Robertson.

John’s PhD was funded by an ESRC Skills Development Scotland Collaborative studentship. We won the grant for the award through a competitive process administered by the Scottish Graduate School of Social Science in spring 2014, and John came to us later in the October of that year having applied for the PhD studentship that we advertised in June 2014. Each year on the second Tuesday of October we mark Ada Lovelace Day at Edinburgh Napier University as part of the worldwide celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and maths. The purpose of this activity is to showcase role models who will encourage more girls into careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), and to support women who are already working in STEM. Call for papers: #EBLIP10 Glasgow 2019

The #EBLIP10 committee, led by Professor Alison Brettle, has issued the call for papers for the tenth Evidence Based Library and Information Practice (EBLIP) conference. This event will take in Glasgow from 17th to 19th June 2019.

Submissions for papers and posters that fit with the broad theme of ‘Using evidence in times of uncertainty’ are invited via EasyChair. Abstracts of a maximum of 350 words (for both types of submission) are due by ~~30th November 2018~~ Monday 10th December 2018. The submissions will be subject to double blind peer review by members of the International Programme Committee, with decisions communicated to authors by ~~15th~~ 18th January 2019. Colin Smith

Congratulations to Dr Colin F Smith on his recent promotion to the post of Associate Professor at Edinburgh Napier University.

Colin is a member of the Centre for Social Informatics. His research interests include the role of the Internet for political parties in contemporary democratic practices, digital delivery platforms for public services, and the use of new technology by parliamentarians.

Colin also supervises the doctoral work of three of the PhD students in our group: Najla Almari on interactive education for female students in Saudi Arabi; Iris Buunk on tacit knowledge sharing supported by online social platforms; and Alicija Pawluczuk on the social impact of digital youth projects.

Journal of Librarianship and Information Science #i3rgu 2017 special issue published

Research Impact Value and LIS #LIS_RIVAL: resources and review

Two weeks ago on 11th July 2018 my Centre for Social Informatics colleague Dr Bruce Ryan and I hosted Research Impact Value and LIS (#lis_rival).

This was a lively, sell-out one-day event on the theme of library and information science (LIS) research impact and value at Edinburgh Napier University’s Craiglockhart campus.

#lis_rival brought together 33 delegates from a range of stakeholder groups including academic, health, national, prison, public, and special librarians, as well as LIS academics, officers from the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP – the main UK professional body for information and knowledge workers), and independent consultants.
