i3 logoEvery other year the Information: interactions and impact (i3) conference brings an international community of academic and practitioner researchers together in Aberdeen to explore the quality and effectiveness of the interactions between people and information, and how such interactions can bring about change. In the years in which it takes place, i3 is one of the highlights of the conference season. A return visit to McMaster University in August 2017

Later in summer 2017 I will be visiting McMaster University Ontario, Canada to work with my Canadian collaborator, and Visiting Professor to the Centre for Social Informatics at Edinburgh Napier University, Dr Brian Detlor. Amongst the various activities that we have planned, I will be delivering two seminar papers when I am at McMaster.

The first paper entitled ‘Research into social media information practices, and social media information practices for research’ will be presented as part of the DeGroote Business School seminar series on Monday 14th August. The following day, on Tuesday 15th August, I will relate the main findings of the CILIP/ARA Workforce Mapping Project to an audience of librarians at the McMaster Library Symposium in a paper entitled ‘Defining the UK information worker: the CILIP-ARA Workforce Mapping Project’. Dr Brian Detlor appointed Visiting Professor at Edinburgh Napier University

Congratulations to Dr Brian Detlor on his appointment as Visiting Professor to the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University. This appointment formalises Brian’s long-standing relationship with staff and research students in the Centre for Social Informatics.

Brian is currently Chair of Information Systems in the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada. He is an international scholar who bridges the academic fields of information systems, information science, and business having published extensively in both the information systems and information science disciplines. His work has appeared in leading international journals such as the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, the Journal of Information Science, the Journal of Management Information Systems, the Information Systems Journal, and the Communications of the ACM. Flying from Toronto to St Louis

After a busy few days in Ontario, Canada – during which I contributed to a research symposium at McMaster University on UK efforts to build a UK-wide network of library and information science researchers, ran a workshop on promoting research using social media for McMaster PhD students, and delivered a colloquium paper on the work of the UK Library and Information Science Research Coalition and its lasting impact at the University of Toronto – I am now in St Louis, Missouri in the US for ASIST 2015. The conference proper started on Sunday afternoon (following two days of pre-conference seminars and workshops), and runs until Tuesday evening. Continue reading →

Digital storytelling: an opportunity for libraries to lead in a digital age

The Centre for Social Informatics is currently hosting a visit of Dr Brian Detlor of McMaster University. Yesterday Brian gave a talk on his research and involvement with the Love your city, share your stories (LYCSYS) digital storytelling initiative in Hamilton, Canada. This initiative is led by the Hamilton Public Library, McMaster University Library, and the City of Hamilton.

Brian explained how LYCSYS involves the capture and dissemination of digital stories from Hamilton citizens. The stories relate to significant cultural and historical icons in a wide variety of digital formats, and the use of library resources (for example, photographs, geo-coded digital maps, archival material) to enrich and support the digital stories produced. The initiative is viewed as a critical community-based mechanism by which to promote the City of Hamilton’s cultural identity, and to contribute to the preservation of Hamilton’s history. ASIST2012 – and Hurricane Sandy

ASIST2012 logoASIST2012 was a conference experience like none other. I’d been so busy with my work that before I set off from Edinburgh for Baltimore last Saturday I hadn’t paid heed to the news reports of a hurricane about to hit the east coast of America. In fact, the first I heard of it was when I bumped into fellow UK academic Dr Christine Urquhart at the reception of the conference hotel. Thereafter we heard tale after tale of delegates who had abandoned their plans to come to the conference for fear of becoming stranded, and of others who had arrived, stayed a short while, then turned around again to head home before the hurricane hit. I had no option but to ride out the storm with the few delegates who actually made it to Baltimore and stuck it out.
