Opportunities to embark on PhD study in 2016: four funded places within the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University

The School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University is currently advertising four funded research studentships. Applications are due by Friday 15th January 2016, interviews for the places will take place in February 2016, and the four successful candidates will join us at a mutually convenient time in the first or second quarter of 2016 (i.e. a date prior to the end of June 2016).

The successful candidates will follow in the footsteps of 2015 School of Computing PhD graduates Dr Hannah Rudman and Dr Louise Rasmussen

On this occasion applications are sought in twelve specific areas. Those of us within the Centre for Social Informatics are particularly interested in receiving applications on two themes: (1) information systems for organisational effectiveness; and (2) digital media for cultural engagement. From Ontario to ASIST 2015

Flying from Toronto to St Louis

After a busy few days in Ontario, Canada – during which I contributed to a research symposium at McMaster University on UK efforts to build a UK-wide network of library and information science researchers, ran a workshop on promoting research using social media for McMaster PhD students, and delivered a colloquium paper on the work of the UK Library and Information Science Research Coalition and its lasting impact at the University of Toronto – I am now in St Louis, Missouri in the US for ASIST 2015. Welcome to Dr Laura Muir, Dr Gemma Webster, and Dr Tom Kane, who have all recently joined the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University. Appointment to the programme committee of the 2nd International Data and Information Management Conference

Just as we are about to enter the summer 2015 conference season, we are already looking forward to 2016!

I have recently accepted an invitation to serve on the international programme committee of the 2nd International Data and Information Management Conference. Hosted by the Centre for Information Management at Loughborough University, the conference takes place on the Loughborough campus next year on 12th and 13th January 2016. An outline programme is now available.

For those interested in presenting a paper at this event, submissions for 500 word abstracts open on July 1st, with a deadline of 30th September 2015. Those whose abstracts are accepted will be expected to submit their full papers by 18th December 2015.

Appointment as Chair of the Research Councils UK Digital Economy Theme Programme Advisory Board

I have recently been appointed Chair of the Research Councils UK Digital Economy (DE) Theme Programme Advisory Board (PAB). I take over the role from Brian Collins, Professor of Engineering Policy and Director of the International Centre for Infrastructure Futures at University College London.

My appointment builds on previous work that I have conducted for the DE Theme. This includes: serving on the 12-person panel that conducted the 2012 impact review of the DE Theme investment; involvement in an additional stream of DE research undertaken under the banner of “digital personhood” (I helped identify the scope of the investment and served as a mentor at the sandpit meeting where project ideas were germinated); and reviewing grant proposals and other panel work. I was first appointed a member of the PAB in 2014.

Prizes, papers, and a new publication on success factors in information systems development projects

We currently have eight research students undertaking doctoral studies in the Centre for Social Informatics (CSI) working on a variety of projects. While the goal of our students is to complete their theses within the degree registration period, it’s also important that they share news of their work as it progresses. A number of our current students have recently been busy taking advantage of opportunities to disseminate their research. New work on success factors in information systems projects co-authored by a PhD graduate has also been accepted for publication.

We are currently advertising a fully-funded PhD studentship within the Centre for Social Informatics at Edinburgh Napier University. The studentship is advertised on the Edinburgh Napier University vacancies web site, and on jobs.ac.uk. The title of the study is Enhancing the capacity for workplace learning and innovation in Scotland.

Applications are due by Monday 20th April 2015.
Interviews are planned for Thursday 14th May 2015.
The studentship will start on Thursday 1st October 2015.
