The Centre for Social Informatics has just published a report on digital engagement for community councils and registered tenant organisations. The report presents findings from the Scottish Government sponsored workshops led in October and November 2015 by my research centre colleagues Peter Cruickshank and Dr Bruce Ryan. An award-winning trip to #IDIMC 2016

2016 got off to a terrific start for the Centre for Social Informatics with three award-winning ‘performances’ at the 2nd International Data and Information Management Conference (IDIMC), hosted by the Centre for Information Management at Loughborough University on 12th and 13th January.

The census as an information source: paper in press

At i3 2015

AHRC-funded research student Lynn Killick, who works with me within the Centre for Social Informatics at Edinburgh Napier University, presented a paper entitled The role of the census in public policy-making: information practices of policy makers at the i3 conference last June.

Subsequently Lynn and I worked with Lynn’s two other supervisors to develop this material into an article entitled ‘The census as an information source in public policy-making’ for the Journal of Information Science. Opportunities to embark on PhD study in 2016: four funded places within the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University

The School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University is currently advertising four funded research studentships. Applications are due by Friday 15th January 2016, interviews for the places will take place in February 2016, and the four successful candidates will join us at a mutually convenient time in the first or second quarter of 2016 (i.e. a date prior to the end of June 2016).

The successful candidates will follow in the footsteps of 2015 School of Computing PhD graduates Dr Hannah Rudman and Dr Louise Rasmussen

On this occasion applications are sought in twelve specific areas. Those of us within the Centre for Social Informatics are particularly interested in receiving applications on two themes: (1) information systems for organisational effectiveness; and (2) digital media for cultural engagement. Applications invited for ESRC Scottish Graduate School of Social Science Doctoral Training Centre studentship competition 2016

The Information Science Pathway of the ESRC Scottish Graduate School of Social Science Doctoral Training Centre (SGSSS-DTC) is currently inviting applications for this year’s studentship competition.

Academic staff at each of the pathway member institutions – including those within the Centre for Social Informatics at Edinburgh Napier University – would be pleased to hear from eligible candidates who would like to apply for a PhD place under this scheme. KM as a management innovation: paper in press

Back in June 2015 Dr Louise Rasmussen presented a paper at the i3 conference entitled A KM implementation as management innovation: the impact of an agent of change. Louise and I have since developed this work into an article for the Journal of Information Science, and it has just been accepted for publication. The paper will appear in a special issue of the journal in June 2016.

The theme of the paper is the introduction and adoption of a Knowledge Management programme within a large distributed public sector agency in Europe. It discusses in detail the results of research that sought to provide insight into the adoption process associated with management innovations, with a focus on decision-making. As well as extending theoretical perspectives on KM, this work developed a model that can be used by KM practitioners as a tool for project management at particular points of the management innovation process, taking into account local contexts.
