On the evening of Ada Lovelace Day this year – Tuesday 11th October 2016 – Edinburgh Napier University, with Equate Scotland, is hosting a public lecture by Professor Caroline Wilkinson, Director of the Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University. Caroline will be speaking about her varied career and how it has combined science with a number of disciplines including art, forensics, computing and anatomy.  She will also make the case for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM). I had the honour this week of delivering the laureation address at the Edinburgh Napier University graduation ceremony on Tuesday 5th July. The laureate was Professor Lesley Yellowlees. Lesley is Vice Principal and Head of the College of Science and Engineering, and Professor of Inorganic ElectroChemistry, at the University of Edinburgh. She has been awarded an honorary doctorate in recognition of her major contribution to Chemistry, and her pioneering work to promote the careers of women in science.

The University Chancellor Dr David Eustace conferred Lesley’s award at the Usher Hall at the start of the graduation ceremony for students from the School of Life, Sport and Social Science, and the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Care on Tuesday afternoon. Continue reading →

Dr Ella Taylor-Smith

Many congratulations to Dr Ella Taylor-Smith of the Centre for Social Informatics. Ella will graduate with a PhD from Edinburgh Napier University at the Usher Hall this morning.

Ella has been awarded a PhD for her thesis entitled Participation Space Studies: a socio-technical exploration of activist and community groups’ use of online and offline spaces to support their work. Her doctoral work was supervised by Professor Elisabeth Davenport, Dr Colin Smith, and Dr Michael Smyth.

Next week Ella will be sharing some of her PhD findings in a paper entitled ‘Non public eparticipation in social media spaces’ at Social Media and Society 2016. This major international conference takes place between 11th and 13th July in London. Continue reading →

Demographics of the UK information professions: fact sheets published by CILIP and ARA

This week the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and the Archives and Records Association (ARA) published a series of 24 fact sheets on the demography of the UK workforce in libraries, archives, records, information management, and knowledge management. The data, presented in the fact sheets by sector and region, derive from the findings of the Workforce Mapping Project.

This project was completed in 2014/15 by an Edinburgh Napier University team that comprised three staff from the Centre for Social Informatics (Hazel Hall, Christine Irving and Bruce Ryan) and three from the Employment Research Institute (Robert Raeside, Tao Chen and Matthew Dutton). In November 2015 CILIP and ARA used data from the final project report to publish the headline findings from the study. Continue reading →

Dr Brian Detlor appointed Visiting Professor at Edinburgh Napier University

Congratulations to Dr Brian Detlor on his appointment as Visiting Professor to the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University. This appointment formalises Brian’s long-standing relationship with staff and research students in the Centre for Social Informatics.

Brian is currently Chair of Information Systems in the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada. He is an international scholar who bridges the academic fields of information systems, information science, and business having published extensively in both the information systems and information science disciplines. His work has appeared in leading international journals such as the Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology, the Journal of Information Science, the Journal of Management Information Systems, the Information Systems Journal, and the Communications of the ACM. School of Computing Research Student Conference 2016

Update post-conference: Four of the CSI students won awards at the conference. Frances Ryan won first prize for the best third year full presentation. John Mowbray won second prize for his second year 20×20 presentation and Iris Buunk third prize for hers. Lyndsey Jenkins won second prize in the first year poster competition.

School of Computing Research Student Conference 2016 logoToday the research students in the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University are hosting their annual conference (hashtag #socphdconf). The event has been organised by a committee of six students, three of whom are from the Centre for Social Informatics: Frances Ryan, Iris Buunk and Lyndsey Jenkins. The other student organisers are Baraq Ghaleb, John McGowan and Andreas Steyven. My colleague Dr Kevin Chalmers, who was previously involved in this series of conferences when a research student in the School himself, has also been helping out with the preparations for the event.
